Marion County Amateur Radio Services

"Providing voluntary communications in time of need."
Members and Served Agency Access
Services that we provide:
Emergency Communications
Public Service Communications
Disaster Preparedness
What we are about:
Marion County ARES provides emergency communications in time of need. In the recent past, we have been activated during the windstorm and floods of 1995-1996, as well as other more recent events. With "la nina" expected to bring the more than usual rainfall amounts, we need hams who have commitment to serve in time of need. Your help is needed.
Where you fit in:
You do not have to be a member of the ARRL to be a member of ARES. You do not have to spend money. You don’t have to spend every other weekend training for a disaster. You ONLY have to dedicate as much spare time as you want to public service. Did I mention the fun quotient? We have fun! In our monthly training meetings (see training schedule) , we learn more about our hobby and all of its exciting auxiliary branches. We have Paketeer’s, ATVer’s, DXer’s, bunny hunters and lots of local talent. Marion County ARES has the full cooperation of the Marion County Emergency Management team. This group helps us facilitate training, education, special events, meeting area, and provides communications support by actively maintaining and upgrading a dedicated radio room and communications vehicle that we are allowed to use.
What agencies we serve:
Our unit is an important part of the disaster plans of Marion County, the Red Cross, Cities of Salem, Keizer, Silverton, and Woodburn. Other cities and towns are actively moving forward to include us in their disaster plans. Salem and Silverton Hospital’s also provide mutual cooperation and include us in their disaster plans. We are there for them as they are there for us. During SETs (Simulated Emergency Tests) they depend upon our communication skills and abilities to demonstrate what our mutual resources can offer and how they can be refined.
Our training schedule:
The Marion County ARES team meets on the first Monday night of every month at 7:00 PM (unless that day is a holiday, in which case the meeting is on the second Monday night or as otherwise noted in the schedule). Meetings are held at the Marion County Public Works building located at 5155 Silverton Road NE in Salem. If the gate is closed, ask for help by calling for K7MAR on the 145.290 MHtz repeater.
Simulated Emergency Test (SET) training exercises
There are two major formal SET (Simulated Emergency Test) training exercises per year, usually held in April and November. These state-wide exercises are conducted using a scenario with tests the Marion County ARES team's ability to support Marion County Emergency Management and the City of Salem Emergency Management, our served agencies, and to provide mutal assistance to other ARES units in neigboring-counties.
The ARRL Field Day weekend, held on the last weekend in June, is also a major training exercise.
Community-centered events throughout the year in which we participate as communicators provide additional training sessions for the team. Examples of some of the recent events are the Cascade Half Marathon running race in January, the Keizer Iris Festival Parade and Half-Marathon running race in April, the Marion County Fair in July, the ABC Bicycle ride in August, the Walk for Diabetes in September, the Salem Festival of Lights Parade in December, and Special Olympics event.
October brings a fundraising event, the SWAPTOBERFEST Hamfair, held annually at the Polk County Fair Grounds in Rickreall. At Swaptoberfest, the Polk County ARES and the State Of Oregon Office of Emergency Management (OEM) ARES units plan and staff meetings and workshops to dissemination ARES information. The Marion County ARES team members also help as individuals to staff the event at the request of either of those respective groups. BR>

Since we are an emergency communications group, we need to know what each member can contribute to the team -- not just the equipment that you use, but also the bands that you can operate and the emergency power capabilities that you have. The background check will only be used to determine your ability to access specific areas - this will not prohibit you from becoming a member of Marion County ARES.
Print the form, fill it out, sign it, and then bring it to the next meeting - so we can get your picture for the ID cards.
You can also mail the applications to:
